There are goals galore, and not just in the Premier League. Our business goals, clients business goals (and as a VA, I may play a role in enabling the CEO to complete them), personal goals, family goals, and the bucket lists.

Before I start, it may help to understand the different layers and processes for goals; their purpose and how they are achieved.

A goal in business terms is used to help a business grow and achieve its objectives. For me, these objectives are identified in my business plan.

Goals and Tasks

Goals are then broken down and achieved by tasks. Yes, there is a difference between goals and tasks.

Goals are what you want to achieve. Tasks are how you achieve it.

I have a weekly goal of creating and publishing my marketing content. How that is done is broken down into smaller bitesize tasks, including research and writing my blog each week.



No matter how you record your goals, they have to be SMART.

I don’t know about you, but I have had people ask me, where do I see myself in 5 years and 10 years time. To be honest, I don’t have a clue. I cannot set a goal for 5 years from now. Things change, and a lot of it is out of our control.


Don’t panic, I do have a business plan. I use the Business Canvas Model. It is on my wall and it highlights all the components that I will need to achieve my annual goal.


For this, I use the Good, Better, Best idea. I have come up with what a good year would look like, a better year, and what the best year would be. From there, I create my smaller goals – what I need to do to achieve that overall objective.

I know there are some key elements that I have to do to achieve that goal within the year, but I also have goals that are more time specific and that I can set within a 90 period. For this, I use the massive goal theory or the mountain of goals by David Hyner. The theory is you have a sketch of a pyramid, divided into 4 sections going up. Each of the sections represents 90 days.

90 Days

Now, I agree that setting a whole year’s goals in one go, is not feasible. And I don’t do it. I do it in 90-day chunks. Where I know there are things I have to do every month for the year then I put them in, e.g. marketing, book-keeping; other than that, they remain empty, till the week before the next 90 days begins. I then look at what I have to do to move the forward.

I have a big pyramid on A3 paper, and I use sticky notes to write my goals on. It goes back to that “things change”. Things like the ‘lovely’ GDPR. Therefore the goals can be shifted around. When I complete a goal, I remove it off the front of the pyramid and place it on the back, in the corresponding section in which it was completed. It makes the achieving of goals visible.

Achieving the goal

It is how we achieve these goals that are the key. As I said at the top, the goal is what you want to achieve. It is the tasks that enable you to achieve them. These could take time, they could be outsourced, they are likely to take you out of your comfort field if you are an entrepreneur.

These tasks, for me, go on my to do list. The to-do list takes me to the time-management blog “Are you busy, or productive?”. I need to manage the ‘goals galore’.
