Our lives are busy. We are wearing so many hats or juggling so many different things it is a wonder we don’t drop them. The list of jobs, chores, tasks, errands is endless. Family, children and work are usually a high priority. Are you and your wellbeing a priority? Do you put you first?

Is it any wonder with the endless lists, that we feel the strain?  Overwhelmed, stressed, run down are all common, regardless of whether you are employed or self-employed, married or single, a parent or not. It happens to us all.

What can you control?

In my past life as a teacher, we did well being and / stress training. One exercise gets you to think about what you are actually worried about. How much do you juggle?

Get a piece of paper, fold it in two. On one side write down everything that is worrying you that you have control over. On the other side list everything troubling you that you have no control over, but have a significant impact on you.

Now rip the piece of paper down the middle, so you have two lists, the list you have control over – deal with! The list you can’t control – stop stressing. You can’t do anything about it. It is out of your control. The impact on you, what you do is what you have control over. 

As business owners and sole traders, there are running of the business responsibilities. Most of which we can control. However, the list of jobs, can cause stress, and mean that it takes away from the clients and building the business.

Ways to deal with it

Earlier this year, I did #MindsetReset Challenge ran by Mel Robbins. It is available on Facebook and Youtube. It was a great 35-day challenge that did just that – it challenged the way you think. Simple bite-size activities or task to change your outlook. I was shocked at how much more focus I had bu just getting up when the alarm went off, instead of turning over and going back to sleep till my son’s alarm went off.

The  #Mindsetreset and health and wellbeing are not new things. In 2008 a report came out into ‘Five ways to Mental Health wellbeing‘. The Five Ways were put in a slideshow that expanded on each of the headings.

It sets out 5 actions to improve personal wellbeing; Connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, try something new, give.

I’d add another one there – Put you first.

You first!

We are so busy doing for the kids, clients, partners, parents we seem to forget about us. It might sound selfish, but if you put you first and look after YOU, you will be better equipped to take the world on. The other way to look at it, how are you going to be able to do the juggling if you are ill? 

I have got into the habit of scheduling my day and blocking time out for the family, work time, client time. However, I have also added in something I would forget to do – ME TIME. We need to build in that time to destress and revitalise. Whether it be read a book, go for a walk, watch TV. I also at least one thing for me; clothes shopping, get my hair done.

It does not matter what it is, as long are you are putting you first.

There is only so much one person can do

Ok, you are human, and there are only 24 hours in the day. There may come a time when you can not do everything. That is when we need to delegate, whether it be chores or tasks at work.

Delegation is not a bad thing. It is not a sign of weakness. It can enable you to focus on bigger jobs, which includes family time and building a business.

Take a breath and decide, what could you delegate and to whom.
